About the Client:

The National Agricultural Research Institute (INIA) is a key entity in the Uruguayan agri-food system, dedicated to generating scientific and technological knowledge to improve the productivity and sustainability of the sector. Since its foundation in 1989, INIA has been a reference in research, developing innovative solutions for the challenges faced.

The Challenge:

INIA needed a system that would improve the management of recommendations and calculations for fertilizers and irrigation for its main crops (tomato and bell pepper). Previously, all this management was done through Excel, which was cumbersome and difficult for new users to understand. Additionally, they required real-time information from weather stations to support decision-making.

The Solution:

FertiRIEGO is a platform designed to optimize decision-making in the irrigation and fertilization of greenhouse tomato crops in Uruguay. It is based on local experiments and the VegSyst DSS model from the University of Almería, which simulates nutrient absorption and evapotranspiration of the crop using climatic data such as temperature and solar radiation.

The application calculates nutrient requirements (N, P, K, Ca, and Mg) based on daily absorption, considering factors like soil nitrogen and available nutrients. For irrigation, it relies on evapotranspiration calculated using the ETo kc method, adapted for greenhouses. Climate information is obtained from weather stations and forecasts, updating according to the crop's status.

FertiRIEGO is a responsive web application, making it accessible from any device and natively integrated into INIA's Super App. It offers features such as real-time climate data collection, centralization of information on soils and crops, and automation of calculations for accurate recommendations. Additionally, it includes a role management system, help resources for new users, and security measures to protect sensitive information, promoting efficient and collaborative agricultural management.

The Result:

The implementation of FertiRIEGO will optimize crop management at INIA by providing multiple benefits that will enhance productivity and improve internal organization. One of the most significant advancements will be real-time access to climatic information and the automation of complex calculations for irrigation and fertilization, allowing for more efficient use of resources such as water and fertilizers, generating operational savings, and promoting environmental sustainability.

With the centralization of all relevant information on a single platform, the difficulties of managing spreadsheets will be eliminated, facilitating access and collaboration among the team, saving time, and minimizing human errors. With detailed graphs on soil concentration and requirements, decision-making will be more informed and proactive, strengthening the company’s competitiveness in a demanding agricultural market.
